Coaching: goals, decisions and next steps

Sometimes the useful conversation is not about doing more. It is about what matters to you and which next step is realistic right now.

Coaching is a collaboration focused on personal or professional goals. Questions and dialogue help clarify desired changes, explore options and choose actions. The decisions remain yours. [1]

Your decision, not a ready-made answer

You can bring a specific choice or simply a sense that you want something to change. A session offers room to compare options, clarify priorities and consider how you will recognise progress. You do not have to adopt someone else’s definition of success.

Possible topics

  • Personal or professional choices and a change of direction.
  • Priorities, workload boundaries and a realistic plan.
  • Moving from an intention to small actions you can review.

Your goal does not need to be perfectly worded before you arrive: it can be clarified in conversation.

From a question to a next step

  1. Choose a focus

Which question would you like to explore in this meeting?

  2. Consider options

What is within your control, what resources are available and which limits matter?

  3. Agree on an action

What small step are you willing to try, and when will you review what happened?

Coaching and psychotherapy are different

Coaching is not intended to diagnose or treat mental health conditions and does not replace psychotherapy or medical care. If your needs fall outside its scope, it is important to discuss more suitable support. [2]

Before your first session

Will I be told which decision to make?

The decision remains yours. Coaching can help you consider alternatives and consequences, but you are not required to follow a ready-made answer.

Can we talk about emotions?

Yes, when this helps you understand your choices and actions. The distinction concerns the purpose and scope of the work, not a ban on discussing feelings or the past. [3]

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your goals. The focus, duration and terms are discussed before starting, and the need for further sessions can be reviewed.
