When it may help to seek support

A consultation can be a place to discuss how a difficult experience affects everyday life. For example:

  • Memories return without invitation and are hard to put aside.
  • Reminders of the past bring strong emotional or physical reactions.
  • You avoid certain situations or feel you need to stay constantly on guard.

These experiences do not establish a diagnosis or automatically mean EMDR is right for you. Choosing a method requires individual assessment.

What EMDR is

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a structured psychotherapy in which working with memories may involve eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation guided by a therapist. [1]

NICE guidance includes EMDR among recommended treatments for PTSD in adults under specified clinical conditions. This does not guarantee a particular outcome for every person. [2]

Assessment and preparation come first

EMDR is more than eye movements. Its phases include understanding your situation, preparation, memory work and reassessment. Reprocessing does not automatically begin at the first appointment. [3]

  1. Understanding your situation

Current difficulties, relevant history and goals are explored.

  2. Preparation

The method, your questions and resources for managing distress are discussed.

  3. Working with memories

Reprocessing takes place when appropriate; pace and reactions are monitored together.

  4. Closure and reassessment

Attention is given to how you feel at the end of a session and changes between appointments.

A first conversation with Claudia

At the first meeting, we discuss what brings you to therapy, what you would like to change and the questions you have. The approach and rhythm of appointments are discussed together, taking your situation into account.

You can start by asking about preparation, taking a pause and what support is available between sessions.

A method chosen with care

Preparation needs and the length of therapy vary. Some people need more time before working with memories. No fixed number of sessions can guarantee a particular result. [4]

If you have medical concerns or are already receiving treatment, raise these with the therapist during assessment. This page provides general information and does not replace an individual assessment.

Questions before booking

Do I have to describe every detail?

EMDR generally does not require a detailed retelling of every memory. The information needed is discussed with the therapist. [1]

Can I ask to pause?

Yes. You can say that you need to stop. How to communicate this is discussed with the therapist before reprocessing. [1]

How many sessions will I need?

This cannot be determined from a webpage. It depends on assessment, goals, preparation and how the work progresses.

Are online consultations available?

Claudia offers online consultations. Whether EMDR can be provided in this format, your location and the necessary conditions are discussed individually before starting.

What does a consultation cost?

An individual consultation is €50 for 60 minutes. Couples consultation is a separate service, at €80 for 60 minutes.
