What is IFIO couples therapy?

When a conversation ends in another argument or silence, you can explore not only the subject of the disagreement, but also what is happening for each of you in that moment.

IFIO stands for Intimacy from the Inside Out. Developed by Toni Herbine-Blank, this approach to couples therapy draws primarily on IFS (Internal Family Systems), bringing together exploration of each partner’s inner experience and the relationship between them. [1]

Editorial illustration of dialogue and a couple relationship

Beyond who said what

IFIO explores recurring interaction patterns: for example, one partner pushes for a conversation while the other withdraws. In IFS terms, protective parts and vulnerable feelings may be involved in these reactions. This is a way of understanding the situation, not a diagnosis of a partner. [2]

What sessions can explore

The work may involve noticing your own reactions, feelings and needs, then returning to dialogue with your partner. This is not a mandatory sequence of steps for every couple. [3]

  1. Noticing a reaction

What do I feel when the conversation becomes difficult?

  2. Understanding a need

What matters to me beneath irritation or silence?

  3. Making a request

How can I express my experience without threats or accusations?

What a different sentence might sound like

A hypothetical example, not a client story

“You never want to talk to me.”

“When our conversation stops, I feel lonely. Could we choose a time to return to it calmly?”

One sentence does not resolve a conflict. What matters is whether both partners can speak freely and be heard.

Safety comes first

Where there is violence, threats or coercive control, joint therapy may be unsafe. Abuse is not a shared communication problem: responsibility lies with the person using it. Safety and specialist individual support take priority. [4]

Before your first meeting

How does IFIO differ from IFS?

IFIO applies IFS ideas to couple relationships. It pays attention both to each person’s inner experience and to what happens between partners. [5]

Do we need to choose a method in advance?

No. You can begin with what feels difficult now. Whether IFIO work is appropriate, your goals and the format are discussed with Claudia before starting.

How many sessions will we need?

A fixed number of meetings or preservation of the relationship cannot be promised. Goals, pace and next steps are discussed in light of both partners’ circumstances.
